RIGA International Airport has drafted and presented to the Ministry of Transport an information report for the Cabinet of Ministers on the tender procedure for attracting a private partner in which it suggests that the tender procedure be discontinued.


In July 2009 RIGA International Airport for the first time in its history of operations exceeded 400 thousand passengers handled in one month. In July 432 216 passengers were welcomed which is 10.6 per cent more than in the same period last year when 390 784 passengers were served.


 On 4 August 2009, for the first time in the history of RIGA International Airport, a charter flight of Japan Airlines brought to Latvia a group of tourists and representatives of the leading Japan tourism organizations and public institutions.


In the first six months of 2009 the number of passengers welcomed at Riga International Airport has grown by approximately 10 per cent year on year. In the first half of the year Riga International Airport joined the leaders of the European airport community by demonstrating the fastest growth in passenger traffic - an extraordinary achievement in the generally declining airport industry.


On 16 June, at the 19th ACI* Europe General Assembly the delegates elected Krišjānis Peters, Chairman of the Board of RIGA International Airport, to the Board of ACI Europe**


Despite the steady decline in the passenger traffic and freight turnover registered at European airports, Riga International Airport is a shining exception.


On Wednesday, 10 June, the Italian budget airline Windjet will embark on its first flight from Riga to ForlÌ – the North Italian town in the province of  Emilia - Romagna.


RIGA International Airport has won the prestigious RoutesandOAG (Official Airline Guide) Airport Marketing Award in Europe as the best airport in Scandinavia and the Baltics leaving behind Copenhagen and Stockholm airports.


The state-run JSC Riga International Airport has made a decision to continue the talks with TAV Airport/Skonto būve about the establishing of a joint enterprise for the further development of the Riga International Airport.
