RIGA International Airport in April 2010 handled 296 430 passengers or 9.2 percent less than in April 2009 when it welcomed 326 419 passengers.

On 26 April RIGA International Airport received The Emerging Market Airports Award (EMA) in the Best Airport category handling up to five million passengers per year. The first prestigious award function was held in Dubai and the award was accepted by Krišjānis Peters, Chairman of the Board of RIGA International Airport.

By implementing Regulation (EC) No 1107/2006 concerning the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air RIGA International Airport has become still more convenient and friendly to the people with disability or reduced mobility and is set as example to other airports of the European Union of implementation of the EU Regulation.

TAROM Airlines announces the opening of its new route, starting with the 29th of March 2010, which will connect Riga with Bucharest and introduces special fares starting from 124 EUR with all taxes included, for roundtrip flights, available for purchase on the company’s website: www.tarom.ro.

On 19 April the fifth new airline this year - the Ukrainian national carrier AeroSvit – will start operations at RIGA International Airport. The Ukrainian airline will perform daily flights between Riga and Kiev.

According to the aviation industry market research publication OAG Aviation Solutions (OAG) RIGA International Airport for the second time has entered the top 100 rating of world’s airports in terms of the number of international flight passengers welcomed per week.

A new record has been achieved in the history of RIGA International Airport – more than 15 000 passengers handled in one day. The number of travellers in the Easter holidays rose by one quarter to 67 394 with the punctuality ratio of 99 percent, as shown by the RIGA airport data on air passenger traffic in the period from 1 to 5 April.

 In view of the rapid growth of passenger traffic and introduction of new services, from 23 March the tourist bureau „Welcome to Riga!” at RIGA International Airport will receive clients on vaster premises in the airport terminal.

On Saturday, 13 March, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe Wizz Air with the first regular flight from the Norwegian capital Oslo opened traffic to RIGA International Airport.
