A new record has been achieved in the history of RIGA International Airport – more than 15 000 passengers handled in one day. The number of travellers in the Easter holidays rose by one quarter to 67 394 with the punctuality ratio of 99 percent, as shown by the RIGA airport data on air passenger traffic in the period from 1 to 5 April.
In view of the rapid growth of passenger traffic and introduction of new services, from 23 March the tourist bureau „Welcome to Riga!” at RIGA International Airport will receive clients on vaster premises in the airport terminal.
On Saturday, 13 March, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe Wizz Air with the first regular flight from the Norwegian capital Oslo opened traffic to RIGA International Airport.
In February 2010 RIGA International Airport welcomed 272 013 passengers or 21.1 percent (47 413 passengers ) more than in February 2009 when 224 600 passengers were served.
RIGA International Airport with financing from the EU Cohesion Fund in four years will accomplish significant projects of airfield infrastructure modernisation and reconstruction in the amount of EUR 95 million.
RIGA continues its strong growth in 2010 welcoming 297 659 passengers or 16 per cent (40 974 passengers) more than in January 2009 when 256 685 passengers were served.
On 29 March, as the summer flight schedule sets in, RIGA International Airport will welcome its third new airline so far this year – the Romanian national carrier TAROM. The Romanian airline will operate four flights a week between Riga and Bucharest.
Today, 19 January, RIGA International Airport welcomes the first regular flight of the Belarusian national carrier Belavia from Minsk to Riga.
In 2009 RIGA International Airport welcomed 4 066 793 passengers that is 10.2 per cent or 376 244 passengers more than in 2008 when 3 690 549 passengers were handled.
