The European Commission on 25 July approved the Cohesion Fund (CF) co-financed project „Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development”, the goal of which was to improve the conditions on the land side and the air side of the airport, to raise the safety standards of air travel and to boost the overall capacity of Riga International Airport.


In the seven months of 2011 passenger traffic at Riga International Airport has increased to almost 3 million exceeding last year’s result for the same period (2 615 696 passengers) by 350 thousand.


The European Commission on 25 July approved the large Cohesion Fund (CF) project „Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development”, the goal of which is to create safe and efficient air transport infrastructure answering the needs of the growing air traffic turnover.


In the first six months of 2011 Riga International Airport accounted for 60 percent (2 384 909 passengers) of the aggregate air passenger traffic handled in Vilnius, Tallinn and Riga Airports. In Tallinn 870 045 passengers and in Vilnius 715 296 passengers were welcomed.


In the RIGA International Airport, passengers can take pleasure in a solo show „Summer’s Glory” by artist Sandra Silevica. The exhibition is set in terminal A and C sectors from July 1 until July 21, 2011.


On 28th June, Riga International Airport welcomed Ryanair’s 5 millionth passenger Mr.Agris Stuklis arriving from Glasgow.


The number of handled passengers per day at Riga International Airport has reached new record – on 17th June, 2011 Riga Airport serviced 20 250 travellers. Which is one quarter more than the same day one year ago, when the Airport welcomed 16 100 passengers.


The Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport, Arnis Luhse, has submitted a report to the governing body of the Ministry of Transport regarding the company’s financial results for the period covering the first three months, showing that the airport made profits of half million lats from its economic activities. As a comparison, the airport suffered losses of fifteen thousand lats in the first quarter of the year before.


For the first time Riga Airport’s training center has hosted an international seminar on aviation security issues from 13 to 16 June, 2011. It was attended by executives from aviation industry companies and institutions as well as security personnel from 11 countries. The seminar is organized by Riga International Airport in cooperation with London-based aviation security training and consultancy company Green Light Limited.


Ryanair, the world’s favourite airline, today (14th June) announced a new winter route from Riga to Leeds Bradford, UK. This new route will commence on the 2nd of November 2011 and will operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets for this new route will go sale on www.ryanair.com tomorrow 15th of June for a special launch fare of 17.99LVL.
