Press releases 2011

Arnis Luhse, Chairman of the Board of SJSC Riga International Airport, and the representatives of the Security Department today, on 30 March, will meet Linda Mūrniece, the Minister for Interior, and the heads of the interior services in order to inform them of the airport’s plans of upgrading its security system.

Since February 2011 in the airfield territory of Riga International Airport a bird radar is operating that currently is the only one of its kind in the civil aviation airports of Europe.

In order to upgrade the runway and its infrastructure, Riga Airport has signed the design agreement for development of a technical project. The airport is planning to renovate the runway pavement and strengthen the runway strip, upgrade the runway lighting system in conformity with the international standards, build additional taxiways and reconstruct the apron.

On 3 March at a press conference in Riga International Airport the mass media representatives were informed of the first this year’s operating results and the management’s plans regarding the airport’s development. After the press conference the new bird radar was demonstrated – the only one of its kind in the civil aviation airports of Europe.

Last year 68 thousand flights were performed from Riga International Airport to 82 destinations, of which most popular were London, Oslo, Helsinki and Stockholm.

This week at Riga International Airport additional lighting was installed at the check-in desks of the terminal. Improvement of the employees’ working conditions is one of the first tasks set this year by the new board of the airport.

In 2010 RIGA International Airport welcomed 4 663 692 passengers or 15 percent (597 108 pax) more than in 2009 when 4 066 854 travellers were handled.

While elsewhere in Europe part or even all flights were cancelled, air traffic at RIGA International Airport in December was not significantly disrupted by severe weather conditions.
