On 28 June, Riga International Airport welcomed Ryanair’s 5 millionth passenger Mr Agris Stuklis – masseur of the basketball club „VEF Rīga” arriving from Glasgow. Ryanair’s 5 millionth passenger was also welcomed by Ms Elina Hakkarainen, Ryanair’s Sales and Marketing Executive Director for the Baltic states, and Ms Liene Freivalde, Head of Aviation Marketing of Riga International Airport.

The airline Ryanair has announced its intention in the winter season to open a new route from Riga to Leeds – Bradford Airport (U.K.). The new route will be available from 30 October 2011 twice a week – on Wednesdays and Sundays. Tickets can be booked on the carrier’s website: www.ryanair.com.

The airline Wizz Air on 9 December will start scheduled flights from Riga International Airport to Eindhoven Airport in the Netherlands. Wizz Air will fly to Eindhoven twice a week – on Mondays and Fridays. The tickets are available on the airline’s website: www.wizzair.com.

The international tour operator Tez Tour has signed a cooperation agreement with Austrian Airlines Group on a charter flight programme Riga - Innsbruck (Austria) in the winter season 2011/2012. The first flight from Riga to Innsbruck will take place on 7 January 2012. In total, twelve charter flights will be performed until 24 March and the tour operator is planning to welcome more than 1200 tourists over this period.

The European Commission on 25 July approved the Cohesion Fund (CF) co-financed project „Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development”, the goal of which was to improve the conditions on the land side and the air side of the airport, to raise the safety standards of air travel and to boost the overall capacity of Riga International Airport.

The Investment and Development Agency of Latvia has approved the project of Riga International Airport on introduction of new services. Within the project framework electronic security control gates (e-gates) will be installed at the airport and a new baggage reconciliation system introduced.

In order to provide services to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), Riga International Airport has signed a cooperation agreement with the organisation SUSTENTO. The airport has decided not to commission foreign consultants for this purpose and thus to save no less than 24 thousand euros.

Riga Tourism Development Bureau (Rīgas Tūrisma attīstības birojs -RTAB) jointly with Jūrmala Tourist Information Centre has produced two booklets for the transfer passengers of Riga International Airport: one contains information on nine tourist attraction objects in Riga and the other - on nine objects in Jūrmala that are worth seeing if the travellers have more than three spare hours in Riga between flights. The texts of the booklets are in English and the first edition of each booklet is 5000 copies. The Russian edition will follow soon.

On 8 September 2011 the Ministry of Welfare in a solemn ceremony granted the certificates of the family-friendly company status to twelve companies including Riga International Airport.
