Ryanair, Europe’s only ultra-low cost airline announced a new route from Riga Airport to Manchester, UK. The new route will commence on the 7th of November 2012 and operate twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. In total Ryanair will operate 12 low-fare routes to/from Riga during the winter season of 2012/13 delivering over 800,000 passengers per year.

On 18 July, Riga International Airport welcomed its seven millionth transit/transfer passenger since the restoration of Latvia’s independence – Mr Hari Adhikari (Nepal) who arrived at the airport on an airBaltic flight from Munich to Riga, to continue his way to Helsinki.

Four airlines will offer flights from Riga International Airport to eleven charter destinations in the winter flight season of 2012/13. Travellers will be able to go and enjoy either sunshine on the beaches or snow-capped mountains.

Riga International Airport has developed a strategic noise map of the year 2011, consolidating the data on the territories exposed to aircraft noise, the number of population, various public institutions and noise thresholds in those territories as well as other information. The map will serve as the basis for drafting an action plan for noise abatement in the territory surrounding the airport.

In September two new machines for screening of hold baggage are being installed at Riga International Airport. The installation of the machines for screening of hold baggage is a mandatory requirement of the European Commission. In accordance with Commission Regulation (EU) No 185/2010, outdated baggage screening devices must be replaced.

Construction of an aviation fuel depot in the airport territory is in progress since this June and is planned to be completed at the beginning of 2013.

A Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) border inspection post approved by the European Commission was put into operation on 12 July at Riga International Airport, where FVS performs around-the-clock inspections of import and transit cargo subjected to veterinary border control.
