From 2 July Spain’s budget airline Iberia Express returns to Riga International Airport where for the second year running it will operate a direct connection between Riga and Madrid. From July 2nd until August 31st, the airline will fly to the Latvian city with two weekly frequencies (Tuesday and Saturday).

On 1 May, State Joint Stock Company Riga International Airport commenced construction as part of the project Development of the infrastructure of the Riga International Airport. “The completion deadlines are very tight and require a high level of accuracy in order to affect airport operations as little as possible. However, both passengers and carriers alike will benefit from the implementation of this project of improving the airport infrastructure,” Aldis Mūrnieks, CEO of Riga International Airport, noted.

Riga Airport’s duty-free sales operator ATU Duty Free continues to develop and upgrade the tax-free sales outlets at Riga Airport. In June, a spirits and sweets shop in the passenger area of the terminal was enlarged and merged with the fashion boutique offering the passengers of Riga Airport more opportunities to enjoy the friendly prices and assortment of ATU Duty Free.

On 1 April, Wizz Air, the biggest low-fare and low-cost airline in the Central and Eastern Europe, commenced flights from Riga to Bergen.

On 6 April 2013, Latvian airline airBaltic launched a new route from Riga to the tourist resort of Larnaca, Cyprus. To celebrate the first flight to Larnaca a special cake was made for all passengers of the opening flight.

On May 4 Latvian airline airBaltic launched two new routes from Riga to Olbia on the Italian island of Sardinia and from Riga to Heviz-Balaton, Hungary. The new routes of airBaltic offers convenient travel between the airports, and beyond to destinations in the Baltics, Scandinavia, Russia, and the CIS.

On 12 May 2013, Latvian airline airBaltic launched a new route from Riga to Malta. airBaltic flies from Riga to Malta once a week on Sundays, the return flight from Malta to Riga is operated also on Sundays to secure convenient connections. The new route of airBaltic offer convenient travel between the airports, and beyond to destinations in the Baltics, Scandinavia, Russia, and the CIS.
