Riga Airport – the New Wizz Air Base

In March the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe Wizzz Air announced its plan to open its base with a new Airbus A320 at Riga International Airport on June 19. Along with opening the base the airline will open 4 new routes: from Riga to Barcelona, Doncaster Sheffield, Dortmund, and Paris (Beauvais) as well as increase flight frequency to London (Luton) and Oslo (Torp).

With the new destinations Wizz Air now offers 25 flights a week on 8 routes from Riga – 85% volume increase a year. According to the carrier, its expansion in Riga will have a favourable effect on the local labour market in the aviation and tourism industry as consumers will have access to more low-cost services.

Aldis Murnieks (Aldis Mūrnieks), Chairman of the Board at Riga International Airport notes, “Riga International Airport has a new strategic partner thus solidifying leadership position of Riga Airport in the Baltics. I am happy to say that as a result of the new cooperation the local residents and guests will enjoy both new flight routes and more flights on the existing Wizz Air routes.”
