Send-Off and Welcome Home for Olympic Athletes at Riga Airport

On February 6 Riga Airport hosted a send-off ceremony of Latvian athletes to Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.Aldis Murnieks (Aldis Mūrnieks), Chairman of the Board at public joint-stock company Starptautiska lidosta “Riga” (Riga International Airport) points out, “Every time the athletes leave to the competition there is a special atmosphere at Riga Airport as we realize that it is the moment when their Olympic journey begins. Latvian athletes have always proven themselves to be world-class. Their dedication to achieve success is a good example for each and every one of us as only determination and precision leads to the top – in sports, in aviation as well as any other field. The Airport wishes that Latvian Olympic team would achieve the highest scores in sporting disciplines!”

Our Olympic athletes were sent off by the President of Latvia Andris Berzins (Andris Bērziņš), Minister of Education and Science Ina Druviete, Minister of Transport Anrijs Matiss (Anrijs Matīss), Head of the Latvian Olympic Delegation Sochi 2014 and Secretary General of LOK Zorzs Tikmers (Žoržs Tikmers), Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius (Algirdas Butkevičius), President of Lithuanian National Olympic Committee Daina Gudzineviciute (Daina Gudzinevičiūtė) and Latvian and Lithuanian Olympic delegations.

And starting from February 15 Riga Airport organized welcome home events for Latvian athletes with fans, family, supporters as well as media. On February 15 brothers Andris Sics (Šics) and Juris Sics returned home with a bronze medal from the Sochi Winter Olympics – the first medal for our country in the Sochi Olympics. On February 13 brothers also participated in the luge team relay competition where they won the 2nd bronze medal for Latvia with our other luge athletes Eliza Tiruma (Elīza Tīruma) and Martins Rubenis (Mārtiņš Rubenis).

On February 17 Riga Airport welcomed home the whole skeleton team – Martins Dukurs, Tomass Dukurs, and Lelde Priedulena (Lelde Priedulēna), coaches Dainis Dukurs, Mihails Arhipovs, and Mareks Mezencevs as well as cross-country skiing athlete Inga Dauskane (Inga Dauškāne) and short track speed skating athlete Haralds Silovs’s coach Edvins Silovs (Edvīns Silovs).

On February 20 Riga Airport welcomed home Latvian National Hockey Team. The Airport offered free parking for the fans welcoming home our hockey players.

The closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics was held on Sunday, February 23. On Monday night, February 25, we welcomed home Latvian Olympic team – silver medallists in bobsleigh: Oskars Melbardis’s four-man team and Oskars Kibermanis’s (Oskars Ķibermanis) four-man team as well as biathlonist Andrejs Rastorgujevs and downhill and cross-country skiing athletes. Athletes arrived in Riga on a charter flight from Sochi. Despite the early hour – it was 01:20am – the hall was full of fans not only from Riga but also other regions. Riga Airport ensured live broadcasts of all events in association with Latvian Television.
