Riga Airport welcomes the guests of the EU presidency

From 1 January to 30 June 2015, Latvia for the first time is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. In this period, 200 events of various levels and content are scheduled to take place.

Gints Gariņš, Director of the Ground Handling Department, said that, contrary to routine visits, more sophisticated planning and coordination of all the processes and services take place prior to the arrival of the Presidency guests.  In the aircraft handling, no changes are envisaged. Each separate aircraft will be handled by the ground handling company having an agreement with the respective carrier.

“We don’t expect great organisational changes in the aerodrome,” said Dzintra Jātniece, Director of the Airfield Management Department. “At the end of January, when a large delegation of the EU Presidency arrived, there were some restrictions imposed while escorting the corteges, yet they were introduced for a very short time and in no way affected the flight regularity.”

Before May 20 -21, when Riga hosts the OSCE Eastern Partnership Conference, Riga International Airport will have to cope with increased workload both on the aerodrome and at the VIP Centre, therefore the airport kindly requests the clients to be patient and tolerant during this period.

The top state officials arriving for the events of the Presidency are welcomed in the newly reconstructed, modern VIP Centre of Riga Airport opened in December 2013.
It is expected that during this period approximately 25 thousand guests of the Presidency and 700 journalists will arrive in Latvia.
