We are committed to reducing the impact of our business activities on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. We plan to achieve this by reducing energy consumption and using it more rationally. We purposefully replace energy produced from fossil energy resources with energy obtained from renewable energy resources.

The efficiency of the operation of our energy management system and the fulfilment of the set goals are monitored by the energy management system working group, which constantly analyses energy consumption indicators. For the management of energy resources, we use an analytical tool for energy accounting, which allows us to monitor energy consumption at the airport daily, identify energy consumption excesses, implement corrective actions, and evaluate their effectiveness, as well as set achievable energy-saving goals.

To ensure our operation, we use several energy resources such as fuel, electricity, and fuel.

Electricity

Electricity is our most important energy resource. With it, we ensure the electricity supply of the terminal and technical service buildings and the operation of the cooling systems, as well as the outdoor lighting of the aerodrome and public areas. To reduce consumption, we implement measures to improve energy efficiency, such as switching to LED lighting and educating employees and tenants on energy efficiency issues.

Thermal energy

Thermal energy for heating the buildings of Riga Airport and preparing hot water is provided by the boiler house, which uses renewable energy resources – wood chips and natural gas – to obtain energy. To optimize the thermal energy consumption of buildings, we use an analytical control system that allows timely changes in the temperature in buildings and other thermal energy-saving measures. To improve energy efficiency and reduce heat energy consumption, we rebuild and reconstruct existing buildings, as well as change windows and doors.

Fuel

The biggest fuel consumers at the airport are apron and runway cleaning equipment and vehicles used for passenger carriage and aircraft servicing. Fuel consumption increases significantly during the winter months when snow must be removed from the apron and runway. By 2030, we have committed to changing our aerodrome maintenance and aircraft servicing vehicles, machinery, and equipment to alternative fuel vehicles. Also, to promote the reduction of fuel consumption, we educate employees about the rational use of vehicles.
