Invitation to the formal opening of the reconstructed and upgraded RIX runway

The formal acceptance of the construction works will be attended by Krišjānis Peters, chairman of the Board of RIGA International Airport and Ainārs Šlesers, Minister of Transport. The representatives of the airlines operating at RIGA International Airport and the management of the construction companies participating in the project implementation are also invited to take part in the event.

By implementing this Project RIGA International Airport has acquired a 650-metre extension to its runway, the length of which now has reached 3200 metres. The runway extension will enable Riga Airport to provide services without limits to transcontinental flights and accept large aircrafts, such as “Airbus A 340” and „Boeing „747, 757, 767, 777.

The total Project costs are EUR 23.5 million of which EUR16.5 million were financed from the EU Cohesion Fund.

The implementation of the RIGA International airport runway extension and reconstruction of the lighting system was commenced in May 2007 and its completion is scheduled for 30 October 2008.

The runway extension works were performed by five companies:

SIA „Firma L4” – construction supervisors for extension of the runway and taxiways, reconstruction of the lighting system and the water drainage system;

PS „SC&A” performed ground works – extension of the runway and taxiways, while AS „A.C.B.” was in charge of electrical installation works and reconstruction of the lighting system.

PS „Leminkainen Lemcon” built the drainage system and the German company „Honeywell Airport Systems GmbH” supplied the materials for upgrading of the lighting system.
