15/02/2012

Today, on 15 February, 34 pupils from different regions of Latvia on the traditional „Shadow Day” at Riga International Airport will find out more about 20 different jobs and about the airport operations in general.

The biggest number - six "Shadows” – will follow Arnis Luhse, Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport. The most popular profession, judging by the number of youngsters’ applications, is the air traffic controller. In total 38 pupils wished to „shadow” the traffic controller, yet due to the specific nature of this work only two pupils will be allowed to watch this professional at work.

„Aviation has always attracted interest, therefore, by „shadowing” the representatives of their dream profession the schoolchildren have the opportunity to observe our staff in operation and get answers to all the questions regarding the serious daily work of the airport personnel," said Arnis Luhse, Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport.

„The Shadow Day” at the airport will begin at 11.00 with a presentation about the airport for all the visitors, followed by a guided tour of the terminal and airfield, after which „the Shadows" will join their chosen airport staff.

In addition to the already mentioned, the pupils will follow a bird and wildlife control specialist, an apron inspector, a fire fighter, the Head of VIP and Business Aviation Service, a shift engineer etc.

It should be noted that in 2011 Riga International Airport welcomed 5.1 million passengers or 9.5% more, year on year. Currently 17 airlines operate at the airport carrying passengers to 82 destinations.
