As part of Earth Day celebrations, within the framework of the project „the Greenhouse Effect”, in the period from 21to 24 April a real greenhouse will be erected at Riga Airport. The goal of the project „the Greenhouse Effect” is to provide a platform for discussions about the global warming and sustainable consumption.
The greenhouse will be appropriately accommodated displaying informative materials on the climate change, global warming, sustainable consumption and development as well as the examples of good practice. Various environmental objects and art works will be exhibited in the greenhouse. The people are invited to learn more about the environmental problems and their potential solutions from the individual and public perspective.
The greenhouse will be opened on Thursday, 21 April at 13:00. The event will be attended by Jānis Endziņš, Chairman of the Board of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Raimonds Vējonis, Minister of the Environment, Arnis Luhse, Chairman of the Board of Riga International Airport and other honorary guests. All the participants of the event will have the opportunity to listen to the acoustic concert of the band Astro’n’out, to take part in Varis Klausītājs’ Theatre of Drawings and to enjoy doughnuts with milk provided by the cafe Ze Donuts.
The event is arranged by the Information Centre of Europe Direct in Riga jointly with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Riga International Airport. The project partners are World Wildlife Fund, Sustainable Development Agency, SIA „Gribu visu” and SIA „Padod tālāk”.
Earth Day is vastly celebrated in the USA and worldwide. It was founded in 1970 when the representatives of two thousand colleges and universities, approximately ten thousand students of primary and secondary schools and several thousand other US communities took part in it. Ever since, Earth Day has been the day of peaceful spring campaigns for awareness and preservation of the Earth’s natural environment.
