The Civil Aviation Agency (CAA) informs that starting from 1 September 2024, all European airports will return to the requirement that the maximum volume of a single liquid container in cabin baggage may not exceed 100 millilitres.
Until now, some European airports have gradually introduced the latest generation cabin baggage screening systems, the performance of which has allowed passengers to take larger liquid containers in their cabin baggage without removing them from their cabin baggage.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 2024/2108 of 29 July 2024 amending Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/1998 as regards certain urgent aviation security measures relating to screening equipment for liquids, aerosols and gels provides that as of 1 September 2024, it will be allowed to carry liquid containers with a maximum capacity of only 100 millilitres also at airports where the latest generation cabin baggage screening systems are available.
The CAA would like to point out that passengers whose cabin baggage will be checked with the latest generation systems will not be limited to a maximum number of liquid containers, i.e., the total amount of liquid in cabin baggage will not be limited to one litre. Computers will no longer need to be removed from cabin baggage.
RIX Riga Airport has equipped the Fast Track Security Line and Family Line, as well as the transit passenger screening lines with the new screening system, so for most passengers the current procedure remains unchanged – cabin baggage can contain liquids with a capacity of 100 millilitres per container, all contained in one dedicated plastic container with a capacity of one litre.
The CAA has noticed that some passengers were already familiar with the benefits of the newer cabin baggage screening systems in other countries, and therefore carried larger liquid containers in their cabin baggage on flights to Latvia. The new provisions of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 2024/2108 of 29 July 2024 will also apply to cabin baggage checks at these airports. At the same time, the CAA reminds passengers that they can still purchase larger containers of liquids after the security check and take them on board and in their checked baggage, as long as they are not on the list of prohibited liquids/substances (e.g. petrol, paints, lubricants).
The restrictions are designed to maintain the security of the civil aviation system and are in place temporarily while the new generation of cabin baggage screening systems undergo additional testing and certification.
