03/02/2017

Today, on 2.06.2016, SIA Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas and Riga International Airport signed a memorandum of cooperation to facilitate successful mutual activities in building a Rail Baltica RIX station and fully integrating it in the airport territory by the year 2022.
The Memorandum was signed by the chairman of the board of Riga International Airport Andris Liepiņš, the member of the board of Riga International Airport Ilmārs Upenieks, and the member of the board of the company Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas Dins Merirands. The memorandum will enter into force on the next day after its signing.

Andris Liepiņš, chairman of the board of Riga International Airport:

“The memorandum envisages synchronization of two projects having great significance for the Latvian economy: expansion of the airport check-in area and building of a Rail Baltica station in the airport territory. It is only by close mutual cooperation that the airport and the company Eiropas dzelzceļa līnijas can implement those ambitious projects on schedule and in the most cost-effective way.”

Dins Merirands, member of the board of SIA Eiropas Dzelzceļa Līnijas:

“The synergy of the two companies’ experience will produce the best result. We appreciate this opportunity to jointly seek technical and visual solutions for better integration of Rail Baltica RIX station in the airport. It is our mutual task to ensure unhindered mobility of passengers and access to the airport during construction works, simultaneously taking care that the impact on the operations of the airport and the companies working there is minimal. The cooperation was seen as particularly useful due to the fact that the design and construction works of Rail Baltica RIX station and related infrastructure would coincide with Stage 6 of Riga International Airport enlargement project. The memorandum will come into effect on the next day after its signing – the 3rd of June. The project development is scheduled to be completed by 2019 and the construction works – by 2022.”
