Presentation of the Cohesion Fund Co-financed Project „ Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development”

The European Commission on 25 July approved the Cohesion Fund (CF) co-financed project „Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development”, the goal of which was to improve the conditions on the land side and the air side of the airport, to raise the safety standards of air travel and to boost the overall capacity of Riga International Airport.

Minister of Transport Uldis Augulis said: „In the construction period approximately 150 new jobs are to be created and additional 100 jobs - in the airport auxiliary businesses. Implementation of the project is crucial for achievement of the airport’s long-term vision: to become one of the passenger air traffic transit hubs in the northern Europe and by the year 2032 to raise passenger turnover to 14 million passengers per year.”

The Cohesion Fund (CF) co-financed project „Riga International Airport Infrastructure Development” envisages resurfacing of the runway pavement, strengthening of the runway strip, construction of additional taxiways, renovation of the aprons and building of two aircraft de-icing platforms (total area of 42 000 m²), reconstruction of the storm water and underground drainage system and various other infrastructure improvements.

The project works are scheduled to be completed by December 2011 and construction works are to commence in March 2012. The project will be implemented by 31 December 2013.

Total costs of the project are estimated at 66 945 228 lats, of which co-financing of the Cohesion Fund amounts to 41 114 034 lats or 61%, whereas Riga International Airport is to provide 25 831 194 lats or 39%.

The project approved by the EC is part of the EU funding programme „Infrastructure and Services”.
