On 3 March at a press conference in Riga International Airport the mass media representatives were informed of the first this year’s operating results and the management’s plans regarding the airport’s development. After the press conference the new bird radar was demonstrated – the only one of its kind in the civil aviation airports of Europe.

The press conference was attended by Arnis Luhse, Chairman of the Board, Andis Damlics, Member of the Board, and Dzintra Jātniece, Director of the Airfield Management Department.

After the press conference the journalists had an opportunity to examine the bird radar that has been operating in the territory of Riga Airport airfield since February 2011.

The radar senses flying birds, indicates the sites where the avian activity has been detected, shows the direction of the birds’ flight and the risk level in a specified sector or height (depending on a bird's weight, location and flight direction); it generates visual and audio alarm signals and automatically sends daily reports to specified e-mail addresses; the data are processed and stored on a server.
